5 Best Indian Foods to Start Feeding Your Baby

When I first became a mother, one of the most difficult decisions I faced was what foods to give my baby. When should I introduce solid foods? Just like any other mother would feel. This stage, known as the weaning period, slowly introduces solid foods from breast milk into the baby’s diet. Predominantly, Indians begin weaning foods which are easily digestible before slowly transforming into solid foods.

Did you know that when it comes to introducing solid foods to their infants, Indian parents still choose a conventional approach? In certain societies, it is commemorated with the traditional Annaprashan ceremony which is deeply nurtured with nutrition and love. Many Indians often feed babies rice pudding, or kheer, as their first solid food. First foods should be simple, natural, and must not contain all allergy-causing ingredients.

With regards to the fruits, they are typically introduced slightly later to infants since they contain natural sugar, which may contribute to the development of a sweet tooth if introduced early on.

If you’re wondering what kind of solid foods to give babies, I’ve got you covered in this blog.

The Right Time to Start with Solid Foods

As we navigate motherhood, we often ask ourselves when the optimum time to start eating solid foods is.

All the necessary nutrients for the baby’s early growth and development are included in breast milk, along with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It boosts their immunity and lowers the risk of diseases. When transitioning from breast milk to solid foods, mothers should frequently begin with soft meals to improve their digestive system. It helps in preparing their system for complicated dietary consumption in the future.

Solid foods should be incorporated into a baby’s diet once their body is ready to handle them comfortably.

5 traditional Indian baby foods during your weaning period:

1.  Rice Porridge (Kheer) or Khichdi

Rice Porridge (Kheer) or Khichdi

Khichdi offers a complete meal of carbs, healthy fats, and protein, making it ideal for growing babies. Mixing rice, lentils, and a hint of ghee or a choice of vegetables (as per your child’s nutrition guidance) will further enhance the nutritional value of khichdi. You may also replace khichdi with rice porridge. Coming from an Indian household, I always think that Indian food is the best. They come from old age traditions and authentic sources. Let’s begin with the most staple one in an Indian diet, which is healthy, nutritious, and always safe.

2.  Puree of the vegetables/ Vegetable soup

Mashed puree of the vegetables

Introduce vegetables to your child, including carrots, sweet potatoes, peas, beans, potatoes, and broccoli. Boil and blend them into a smooth puree. Initially, start with one or two vegetables at a time. These vegetables are rich in fibre and nutrients that support the growth of the baby.

3.  Yellow Lentil Soup (Moong Dal Water)

Yellow Lentil Soup (Moong Dal Water)

Moong Dal Soup is one of the best and safest Indian weaning foods for babies. Rich in protein, iron, and easy to digest, this dal is light on the tummy and keeps the baby full. It also helps boost the immune system of the baby.

4.  Mashed Banana or puree

Banana is one of the first fruits that you may introduce to your child. It’s easily digestible, naturally sweet, and will become your child’s favourite fruit. You may also mix it with breast milk or water and blend it. Bananas are an excellent source of minerals, vitamins and potassium, making them a perfect ready-to-eat snack for babies.

5.  Avocado (Mashed)

Avocado (Mashed)

With the increase in demand for avocados, it’s becoming a popular choice amongst mothers to feed their babies because of its mild and soft texture. You may serve Avocado by mashing it according to the baby’s food requirements. Avocados are rich in healthy fats, fibre, and provide other essential nutrients. It can become a significant addition to a healthy diet.

6.  Other foods

Apart from the foods which are mentioned above, you may introduce yogurt, wheat or Dalia, other fruits, mashed eggs (hard-boiled, scrambled, or well-cooked omelette), meat, fish, fats/oil gradually to your baby.

I recommend beginning with one new food item every 3-4 days before introducing another solid food. This approach will help you track sensitivities and allergies and help you understand what type of food is suitable for your baby.
